Windows 7: I wish they hadn't said that

According to El Reg, Microsoft has said that Windows 7 will be ready in time for Christmas 2009. Which of course means it will need to be ready a good deal before that. Now, just lately it has appeared that Microsoft had learned some lessons. They have been keeping Windows 7 simple and they have been throwing out any buggy features that might delay the launch. So we might actually get a new Microsoft OS that works the way it's supposed to. Until today: now they've hitched themselves to Christmas 2009, the process will be driven by sales and marketing rather than by technical readiness. So it might still be a turkey, though less of a turkey than Vista.

Time for a lovely Mac!

Install Windows XP or Vista on it for dual booting, or with some additional software in a virtual machine for simultaneous operation, to make the transition easier and just break freeeeeeeee!

If I moved away from Windows it would be to Linux. Just can't get the rest of the workforce to agree.

Windows 7, as with other versions of Windows will be bloatware, inefficient, susceptible to spyware and viruses and will only become relatively stable after a year or more after issue by SP1.

Surely Liberals should be opposed to the monopolist practices of Microsoft ?

I use Linux and Macs extensively and differing versions of Windoze at work. For style, great hardware, intuitiveness, range of commercial software, robustness, meshing of hardware and software go for a Mac.

Linux is getting easier to use all the time. On most new-ish PC hardware go for Ubuntu 8.10 or Linux Mint. Dual booting (with Windows gets ever easier. What have you to lose by trying a 'live' CD / DVD ?

As a liberal I take a nuanced view of Microsoft's practices. In addition, for myself I prefer not using MS products, but as a sysadmin, I have limited powers to wean the rest of the workforce off MS. C'est la vie.

We're keeping our fingers crossed where I work. We're hoping that if Microsoft keep their act together (unlikely!), we might be able to bypass Vista all together and bounce from XP straight up to 7.

Unfortunately, Dell (who have our contract this year) are now moving over to only supplying laptops with "Vista only" hardware for which it's impossible to get XP drivers. Grrr...
